Today is the ninth and last day of Chaitra Navratri. This day is dedicated to Mother Goddess Siddhidatri, the presiding deity of perfection of power and accomplishments. As is clear from their names – ‘Siddhi’ means supernatural power and ‘Daatri’ means the one who gives. According to mythological beliefs, there is nothing in the world which cannot be achieved by the grace of mother. Sitting on a lotus flower, the four-armed form of Maa Siddhidatri is extremely divine and compassionate, which leads her devotees to salvation and spiritual bliss.

Mythological fast story of Maa Siddhidatri: How Lord Shiva became ‘Ardhanarishwar’?

In the beginning of creation, when there was only darkness all around, Adi Shakti Maa Kushmanda created the universe and gave birth to the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh). Lord Shiva prayed to Mother Kushmanda to attain perfection for the functioning of the universe. Then another power appeared from within Goddess Kushmanda, who was called Maa Siddhidatri.

Goddess Siddhidatri blessed Lord Shiva with the eight Siddhis (Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakamya, Ishitva and Vashitva) along with 10 other Madhyamik Siddhis. In this way Lord Shiva became the master of all accomplishments. After this, when there was a need for man and woman for the expansion of life in the universe, then Mother Siddhidatri merged herself into half the body of Lord Shiva. This half female and half male form of Shiva was called ‘Ardhanarishwar’. This story tells us that man and nature complement each other.
