Ottawa: The political future of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau now hangs in the balance. He is being severely criticized in the country and abroad. His most senior minister and one-time close aide, Chrystia Freeland, has resigned from cabinet. Freeland resigned after openly saying he disagreed with Trudeau on government spending and the future of the program.
Newly elected US President Donald Trump has hinted at increasing import taxes on Canadian products. Experts say that this policy of Trump is likely to have a serious impact on the Canadian economy. Because 70 percent of Canada’s exports go to America only.
MPs from Trudeau’s own party, the Liberal Party, are openly demanding his resignation. New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh has also told Trudeau that his party is dangerous for Trudeau if he wants to remain Prime Minister next year also. However, the opposition currently does not have the necessary majority to pass this proposal. However, to save himself, Trudeau must garner the support of Jagmeet’s New Democratic Party and the Bloc Québécois.
Justin Trudeau also has some options to avoid this political crisis. He can either suspend Parliament, which he did during a scandal in 2020, or step down and hand over power to his successor.
Despite all this confusion, Trudeau has indicated that he will participate in the elections to be held in 2025 as the leader of the Liberal Party. However, the surveys have increased their headache. Those surveys said that if elections were held now, the opposition Conservative (Tory) Party could achieve a landslide victory. In such a situation, Trudeau’s next step will decide his future.
