Alert of cold, rain and snowfall in many states

Many parts of the country are currently facing severe cold. At some places it is raining heavily and at other places snowfall and dense fog is continuing. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted cold and severe drop in temperature in Himachal Pradesh and other parts of North India on December 30 and 31. Severe cold is also predicted in Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Chandigarh from December 29 to January 3.

Cold wave and snowfall conditions will also persist in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan and Muzaffarabad on 30 and 31 December. The weather will be clear in Delhi from today (29 December 2024), but the cold will increase further.

Rain increases chill in Delhi

There were intermittent rains in Delhi and NCR on the night of 27 to 28 December, which further increased the cold.

  • Drop in temperature:
    • Maximum temperature: 15 to 17 degrees Celsius.
    • Minimum temperature: 8 to 10 degrees Celsius.
  • Effect of cold:
    • The chill increased due to rain and strong winds.
    • There was less crowd in the markets and roads.
    • People are using heaters and blowers in their homes.

  • 29 December 2024:
    • The rain will stop and the sky will remain clear.
    • There will be fog in the morning, but there may be light sunshine during the day.
    • The minimum temperature was recorded at 9 degrees Celsius.
  • As of 31st December:
    • The weather will be dry and cold.
    • Light fog and cold forecast on New Year’s Eve.
  • Previous Records:
    • The mercury has been 5 degrees or less on New Year’s Eve in the last six years.
    • The minimum temperature recorded on 28 December 2019 was 2.4 degrees Celsius.

Chance of rain and snowfall in these states

The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast of rain and snowfall in several states in the next few days:

  • Himachal Pradesh:
    • Chances of snowfall and hailstorm between 29th and 31st December.
  • Western Himalayan Region:
    • Forecast of rain and snowfall between January 1 and 6.
  • Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh:
    • There will be dense fog till December 31, which may cause problems in transportation.

According to the Meteorological Department, two new western disturbances are becoming active, which are causing these cold conditions.

  • Affected areas:
    • North and West India.
    • Rain and snowfall in the Himalayan region.
  • Travel Obstacles:
    • There may be disruptions in transportation due to fog and cold.
