For the last two days, a video is becoming increasingly viral on social media, in which some youth are seen dancing to the tunes of DJ and consuming beer on a boat in the middle of river Ganga in front of the ghats of Varanasi.
Police action: Taking cognizance of the video, Bhelupur police station registered a case. ACP Gaurav Kumar said that Arjun Rajbhar, an accused of drug addiction on the boat, who is involved in decorating boats, has been arrested. The search for the remaining youth is ongoing.
Public outrage: The devotees who give the status of mother to Ganga and the local Panda-Purohit community have strongly condemned this act and termed it as a violation of religious decorum.
Akhilesh Yadav’s taunt: “People are under tension under BJP rule”
Reacting to this incident, former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav targeted the BJP government while talking to journalists in Lucknow. He said: What’s new in this? Now beer is being drunk everywhere. Ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power, people have started drinking more because they are under tension and facing many problems.”
Akhilesh further sarcastically said that the government does politics only in the name of religion, but in reality even the dignity of religious places is no longer safe. He linked it to the failure of the government and the growing frustration among the youth.

This is not the first time that there has been a dispute over food or drink in Ganga.
