Air pollution in 10 big cities of India is a 'big threat', 33000 deaths every year, shocking report

The study claims that 33 thousand people die every year due to air pollution in 10 cities of the country. According to the report, clean air standards in India are already higher than international clean air standards, but pollution above the set standards in many cities has become a big problem. Due to which people are suffering from many diseases.

These 10 cities are at greater risk of air pollution

According to the report, between 2008 and 2019, 10 cities of the country, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Shimla and Varanasi were studied, 33 thousand deaths occurred in these cities due to air pollution. The study found that the level of air pollution below the current Indian air quality standards also increases the daily mortality rate in the country. About 33,000 deaths occur every year due to air pollution levels in 10 cities of the country, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Shimla and Varanasi. Which is more than the WHO guidelines.

12 thousand deaths every year in the capital Delhi

Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Chennai have seen a large number of deaths but the situation is much worse in the capital Delhi. According to the report, 12,000 people die every year in Delhi due to air pollution related diseases, which is 11.5 percent of the total deaths in the country. The report says that India needs to tighten national air quality standards and double efforts to control air pollution.

Shimla also faces threat of air pollution

After Delhi, Varanasi has the highest number of deaths, with 830 people dying every year, accounting for 10.2 per cent of the total deaths. Bengaluru has 2,100 deaths, Chennai 2,900, Kolkata 4,700 and Mumbai around 5,100 people die every year due to air pollution. Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, has the lowest air pollution. However, the level of air pollution in the hill town still remains a threat. Shimla has 59 deaths per year, accounting for 3.7 per cent of the total deaths. The report was prepared by researchers from the Sustainable Futures Collaborative, Ashoka University, the Centre for Chronic Disease Control, Sweden's Karolinska Institute, Harvard and Boston University.
