New Delhi: With more states facilitating trading of agricultural commodities on the government's electronic National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) platform, trade on the digital wholesale platform across India is expected to reach Rs 23,523 crore during the April-July 2025 financial year, up 13 per cent.
Inter-mandi and inter-state trade of agri-commodities has also grown significantly on the digital platform, which currently integrates 1389 mandis in 27 states. Over the last five years, trade on the digital wholesale market operated by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2019-20 stood at Rs. 34,940 crore, a growth of 124% over the previous fiscal. In fiscal year 2024, the platform will generate sales of Rs. 78,424 crore.
The agriculture ministry has requested states to relax norms, including allowing outside traders to buy and sell commodities without bank guarantees, seamless state-wide trade access and provision of unified licences for farm gate purchases.
Farm gate, inter-state and inter-mandi trade volumes are still a small part of the total e-NAM turnover, indicating a gradual shift to digital platforms used by farmers to find better prices. The government's focus is on increasing electronic payments to farmers and increasing inter-market and inter-state trade on e-NAM.
In the first four months of FY 2025, inter-market trade on e-NAM was estimated to be Rs. 580 crores. This boom that started in the last financial year in terms of inter-state trade will continue in the current financial year as well.
The total traded value of commodities on the digital platform using the farmgate model stood at Rs 18 crore in April-July 2024-25, a growth of 108 per cent year-on-year.
The government has recently announced that more than 1,500 mandis will be integrated with the e-NAM platform. In addition, 409 farmer producer organizations, 0.25 million traders and about 0.11 million commission agents are registered with e-NAM.
The e-NAM platform currently allows online trading in 219 agricultural, horticultural and other commodities notified by the respective state governments.
