Agreements between Putin and Kim Jong Un reflect commitment to mutual assistance in times of war

Pyongyang: Russian President Putin left here for Vietnam today. Earlier yesterday, President Vladimir Putin and North Korean President Kim Jong Un reached a very important agreement as both countries agreed to help each other in times of war.

North Korea's news agency Korean Central News Agency said on Thursday that the agreements reached between the two leaders on Wednesday were about a comprehensive strategic partnership. Article 4 of these agreements states that if one country is invaded and put into a state of war, the other country will immediately provide military and other assistance to the other country by all means at its disposal.

These agreements between Moscow and Pyongyang strengthened the relations between the two countries after the end of the Cold War. Kim and Putin described these agreements as taking the relations between the two countries to a higher level. These agreements also cover security, trade, capital investment and human and cultural relations.

The US and its allies have expressed concern about the deals because Pyongyang would supply Russia with much-needed conventional arms and ammunition. In return, Russia would assist North Korea with its nuclear weapons and missile programmes.

After the summit, Kim said that there is a deep friendship between the two countries and these agreements are becoming the most respected treaties. Putin described the agreements as a boundary-breaking document that will take the relations between the two countries to an even higher level.

In 1961, a treaty was signed between North Korea and the then Soviet Union. It stated that if North Korea was attacked, the Soviet Union would immediately come to its aid. But those agreements became invalid after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Then in 2000, Russia and North Korea signed agreements, but they were very weak. It did not specifically mention assistance in the defense sector.

Regarding these agreements, South Korea said that it is still studying them. After that it will give its response.

There is tremendous tension between North and South Korea at this time. Russian and North Korean forces have conducted military exercises in the North. At the same time, the US-Japan and South Korea are conducting joint naval exercises in the South Eastern Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, North Korea is testing ICBMs with its nuclear warhead capable of hitting up to 12,500 miles. At least, Kim-Jong-Un has openly declared his support for Russia in the Russia-Ukraine war.
