There is an atmosphere of anger in the country today regarding these words which make one angry as soon as they are heard. The CBI has intensified the investigation into the case of rape and murder of an intern doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital. The investigating agency has prepared a list of 35 interns and trainee doctors who will be questioned. Along with this, the Indian Medical Association has announced a nationwide strike. This case has reminded everyone of the painful story of nurse Aruna Shanbaug who was in a coma for 42 years. That nurse also had to endure torture for 42 years.

On the morning of 27 November 1973, when Aruna Shanbaug, a nurse living in Worli, Mumbai, woke up to go to the hospital, she had a mild fever. Niece Mangala Naik requested her to rest, but Aruna did not listen. She went to the hospital and from there began the painful story of her life. That night a ward boy raped Aruna. Later, fearing to be caught, he strangled Aruna with a dog chain and fled thinking she was dead.

Aruna Shanbaug did not die but she lived a hellish life for 42 years. The same cruelty that was done to Aruna in a hospital 50 years ago is now happening in a hospital in Kolkata, due to which the country is boiling. Let's know Aruna's story…

After working till late night, when Aruna went to the changing room in the basement of the hospital to change her clothes, Sohanlal was already present there. Sohanlal tried to strangle Aruna with a dog chain. At that time Aruna's brain could not get oxygen and her body became lifeless. After this Sohanlal raped Aruna and ran away thinking she was dead. In the morning, a cleaner cleaning the hospital found Aruna in an unconscious state.

This lunatic tried to kill the smiling girl to take revenge. Actually, while working in the dog research laboratory of KEM hospital, Aruna got information that a ward boy named Sohanlal was stealing mutton brought for the dogs. There was a fight between Aruna and Sohanlal over this matter. Aruna also complained about this to the hospital administration. Sohanlal felt so bad about this that he decided to take revenge from Aruna.

Aruna came to Mumbai from Karnataka in 1966 and started working as a nurse at King Edward Memorial Hospital. Sohanlal Valmiki was a ward boy and sweeper at the hospital and was arrested on 28 November 1973 after raping Aruna. Gradually Aruna lost her vision and hearing and her brain became inactive. Later, Aruna was put on life support system and was given fluids through a tube. After the incident, Aruna's relatives broke off relations with her. The hospital management says that in the last 42 years, none of her relatives came to meet her nor did they receive any news from anyone. Only the doctors and nurses of the hospital took care of her. She remained in the hospital all her life and the hospital treated her…

Seeing Aruna's condition, Pinky Virani, a former nurse of KEM Hospital, filed a petition in the Supreme Court in 2011 seeking euthanasia for her, but the court rejected it. The Supreme Court praised the nurses and staff of the hospital who left no stone unturned in serving Aruna for years. Aruna was so deeply shocked by this incident that she started fearing even a man's voice. Finally, on 18 May 2015, Aruna's struggle bore fruit and she said goodbye to this world due to pneumonia.

What happened to Aruna's culprit?
Mumbai police registered a case of robbery and attempted murder against Sohanlal in 1974 but no case of rape was registered. The police also did not show in their records that Aruna was sexually assaulted. A local court sentenced Sohanlal, a resident of UP, to 7 years in jail on the basis of the charges filed against him. Sohanlal had served one year of his sentence. Now his sentence became 6 years and eventually he too died in Delhi.
