custodial death in Davanagere : A violent mob created a ruckus in a police station in Channagiri of Davanagere district of Karnataka after the death of a man named Adil in police custody. The angry mob pelted stones and set several vehicles on fire. Police said that 30-year-old Adil was detained on May 24 on suspicion of being involved in gambling activities, but he died in the police station on Friday due to deteriorating health.
The relatives of the deceased created a ruckus in the police station
On hearing the news of Adil's death, his family members reached the police station and created a ruckus. Meanwhile, the crowd damaged police vehicles and pelted stones. Although the crowd dispersed due to lathicharge by the police, the family members of the deceased allege that Adil died due to torture in police custody.
Channagiri turned into a police cantonment
Davanagere Superintendent of Police Uma Prashant said the body has been taken to a government hospital for postmortem, after which it will be handed over to the family members. He said a police team is currently patrolling the areas where the incident took place and additional police have been deployed in Channagiri. He denied that Adil was tortured in police custody and said there were no injury marks on the deceased's body.
Adil died within seven minutes of being brought to the police station
The police claimed that Adil died within seven minutes of being brought to the police station, after which he was taken to the hospital. But after examination, the doctors said that he died due to low blood pressure.
Seven police vehicles damaged, 11 personnel injured
Davanagere SP Uma Prashant said, 'A person named Adil was brought to the police station for questioning. During this time he fainted. Adil was not even in the police station for six-seven minutes, but people are alleging that he died in police custody. CCTV cameras are installed in the police station. The deceased's father has lodged a complaint that Adil's death will be investigated. Seven police vehicles were damaged in the mob attack and 11 policemen were injured in the attack. Three FIRs have been registered in this case. Now the situation is under control and Section 144 has been imposed.
