In the election machinery of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the youth wing i.e. Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) has always been the nursery of future leadership and the strongest pillar to connect new voters. In recent times, a new wind of generational change has been seen at the organizational level within the party. After a long and aggressive tenure of firebrand MP from Bengaluru South, Tejasvi Surya, the party has now reposed confidence in a new, educated and grassroots face from Western India, Dr. Hemang Joshi, and has entrusted him with the important national responsibility of mobilizing the youth. Hemang Joshi, who became one of the youngest faces in the 18th Lok Sabha by winning from Vadodara in Gujarat by a record number of votes, is now faced with not only managing the organization but also communicating with the ‘Gen-Z’ generation whose political thinking, aspirations and priorities are completely different from traditional politics.
Who is Dr. Hemang Joshi: Inspirational journey from Vadodara student movement to Parliament
Hemang Joshi’s political rise is the result of educational and organizational work done at the grassroots rather than any dynastic influence. Hailing from a highly educated background, Hemang Joshi completed his higher education from the prestigious Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), Vadodara, and was active in student politics through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) since his youth.
Before reaching Parliament, he did remarkable work in the field of modernization of government schools, smart classrooms and quality education as the Vice Chairman of Vadodara Municipal Primary Education Committee (Municipal School Board). When in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party fielded Hemang Joshi as a young face by canceling the ticket of the sitting MP from a high-profile seat like Vadodara, he proved his organizational ability by winning by a huge margin of more than 5.82 lakh votes. His gentle nature, logical speaking style and way of working by staying away from controversies makes him an acceptable leader among the new generation.
Tejasvi Surya’s firebrand style vs Hemang Joshi’s modern governance model
This leadership change is being seen as a strategic shift within the party. During his tenure, Tejaswi Surya had created a strong core support base among the youth across the country through aggressive Hindutva, intense nationalism and sharp speeches. Today’s youth scenario is not limited to traditional political discourse only.
Hemang Joshi’s profile appears more administrative, academic and policy-driven than that of Tejashwi Surya. While Surya has the image of a fiery speaker, Hemang Joshi is being projected as a youth leader who can directly communicate with the youth on issues of employment, innovation, startup ecosystem, higher education and digital skills. Through this change, the party wants to establish its image among the youth as a balance of ideological aggression as well as practical development and future-oriented approach.
Taking the pulse of Gen-Z: The biggest political challenge
The Gen-G generation, born after 2000 and growing up in the era of smartphones and high-speed internet, is the most unpredictable and independent vote bank for any political party. This generation does not vote based on any traditional political party or family leanings, but has its own clear criteria:
-
Career and Economic Opportunities: In this era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Gen-G is more interested in tech skills, gig economy, startup funding and global opportunities rather than traditional government jobs.
-
Transparency and quick results: This generation that watches reels and shorts on social media relies on straight talk and hard data rather than long political speeches.
-
Modern Issues: Issues like climate change, mental health awareness, and personal freedom are primary for them.
The biggest challenge before Hemang Joshi will be how he connects the party’s idea of traditional nationalism with these modern concerns and whether he is able to communicate with the youth on digital platforms in the language of the youth.
A new era of digital outreach, campus politics and podcast culture
The days of traditional rallies and distribution of pamphlets are over. In Hemang Joshi’s new strategy, emphasis is being laid on direct townhall meetings in universities, IITs, IIMs and colleges. To reach out to the youth, the party is now creating new formats of communication with young podcasters, YouTubers, tech-influencers and startup founders.
Hemang Joshi himself is known for his comfortable use of social media and new technologies. His plan is to take the problems of youth directly to the policy makers through events like state-wise ‘Youth Parliament’ and ‘Hackathon’. This will make the youth realize that they are not just a voter but also a participant in the decision process of nation building.
From Gujarat Model to National Horizon: An Examination of Regional Expansion
It is one thing to be successful in Vadodara and Gujarat, but uniting India’s diverse youth from Kashmir to Kanyakumari is a completely different challenge. While the issues of local identity and language dominate in the states of South India (Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana), in North and East India, problems like employment and paper leaks are the major concerns of the youth.
Hemang Joshi will have to develop a pan-India appeal. Apart from Hindi and English, they will have to create a strong second-line leadership of youth workers of regional languages who can understand the anger and expectations of the local youth in time and present political solutions to it.
Long preparations for the upcoming assembly elections and 2029
This organizational reshuffle of BJP is not just immediate, but a step taken keeping in mind the next general elections (2029) and the assembly elections of various states to be held before that. Every year crores of new voters are joining the country. The opposition is also continuously trying to mobilize the youth on issues like unemployment, scholarship and Agneepath scheme. In such a situation, this new responsibility of Hemang Joshi will decide whether BJP is able to maintain its dominance among the new voters or the opposition succeeds in capitalizing on the youth anger.
