After America, there is going to be a change of power in India's neighboring country Mauritius. Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth's coalition L'Alliance Lepape has faced defeat in the parliamentary elections. Alliance of Change leader Naveen Ramgoolam, 77, is set to become the next leader of the Indian Ocean archipelago. PM Modi on this occasion

Naveen spoke to Ramgoolam and congratulated him on his victory in the parliamentary elections. He also said he looked forward to working together to further the 'special and unique partnership' between the two countries.

PM Modi sent best wishes

PM Modi, in a post on social media platform 'X', said, had a warm conversation with my friend Naveen Ramgoolam and congratulated him on his historic victory in the elections. I wished him success in leading Mauritius and invited him to visit India. The Prime Minister said that I look forward to working together to further strengthen our special and unique partnership.

Became PM for the third time

It is noteworthy that Pravind Jugnauth was the Prime Minister of the country since 2017. After victory, Naveen Ramgoolam will become the Prime Minister of the country for the third time. The people of Mauritius voted for 62 parliamentary seats on Sunday. There was a contest between 68 political parties and 5 alliances. The party or coalition that secures more than half the seats in Parliament becomes the Prime Minister.

The important thing is that Jugnath and Ramgoolam have inherited politics. Leaders of both families have ruled Mauritius for a long time. 77 year old Ramgoolam is the son of Sivasagar Ramgoolam. He played an important role in the independence of Mauritius. He served as Prime Minister from 1995 to 2000 and again from 2005 to 2014.

How are Mauritius-India relations?

  • Regarding India's relations with Mauritius, about 70% of Mauritius' population of 1.2 million is of Indian origin. Mauritius gained independence from British rule in 1968. The first people to reach Mauritius from India were from Puducherry.
  • Mauritius is one of the important countries with which India established diplomatic relations in 1948. India was represented in British-ruled Mauritius between 1948 and 1968 by an Indian Commissioner and then by a High Commissioner after Mauritius gained independence in 1968.
  • India has been at the forefront of providing assistance to Mauritius in times of crisis. The world also saw this in COVID-19 and the Wakashio oil spill crisis. At the request of Mauritius, India sent 13 tonnes of medicines, 10 tonnes of Ayurvedic medicines and an Indian Rapid Response Medical Team for supplies to help fight Covid in April–May 2020.
  • India was also the first country to supply 1 lakh doses of free Covishield vaccine.
