Congress has made a major change in its strategy after many constituents of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (India Alliance) supported the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) amid the Delhi Assembly elections. Now Congress has adopted an aggressive stance against AAP and started making direct attacks. This has made it clear that Congress is no longer in a mood to show any leniency towards AAP.

Congress retreated from personal attacks

Senior Congress leader Ajay Maken was about to accuse AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal of being a traitor last week. But the party stopped this step at the last moment.

  • Reason:
    • Congress feared that such an attack might anger other constituents of the India alliance.
  • outcome:
    • This strategy backfired, as many constituent parties openly supported AAP.
    • Kejriwal also launched a scathing attack on the top leadership of Congress including Ashok Gehlot.

Targeting AAP on social media

Ahead of the formal start of the election campaign, Congress released a video on its official social media handle.

  • Allegations in the video:
    • AAP was accused of betraying the people of Delhi by lying.
  • Rahul Gandhi also joining:
    • Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was also seen in this video.

However, Congress is still avoiding personal attacks on Kejriwal and is moving forward slowly.

‘Cancelling a press conference is not a weakness’

A senior Congress leader said the party was forced to adopt an aggressive stance against AAP.

  • Reaction to cancellation of press conference:
    • “AAP called it our weakness, but it is not true. “We had to rethink our strategy.”
  • plan ahead:
    • Congress will now enter the field with full force in election rallies and campaign.

AAP gets support from India Alliance constituents

Many parties in the India alliance have openly supported AAP, forcing Congress to change its strategy.

  • Samajwadi Party (SP):
    • Akhilesh Yadav supported AAP.
  • Trinamool Congress (TMC):
    • Mamata Banerjee supported AAP, for which Arvind Kejriwal thanked on social media.
  • Other parties:
    • Many other constituent parties have also given statements in support of AAP.

Congress’s new strategy:

  1. Aggressive Promotion:
    • To corner AAP on issues of corruption and false promises.
  2. Focus:
    • To convey our message to as many voters as possible.
  3. Balance of Coalition:
    • Effective campaigning against AAP while maintaining cohesion within the India alliance.
