Dubai: The Taliban has been ruling Afghanistan since 2021, which India has not yet officially recognized. However, there are now signs that India’s stance is changing. India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Mistry met Maulvi Amir Khan Muttaki, Foreign Minister of the Taliban government of Afghanistan in Dubai. They held wide-ranging discussions between the two countries on issues such as bilateral trade, regional security and humanitarian assistance provided by India in Afghanistan.

The visit of India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is taking place at a time when there is tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan. In response to Pakistan’s air attack, Afghanistan attacked the Durand Line and captured some Pakistani posts. At such a time, India and Afghanistan are coming closer.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has promised to continue humanitarian and development assistance to Afghanistan for its people. Apart from this, both the countries have also agreed to increase trade through Cha-Bahar port of Iran.

The Taliban has been under immense pressure over the health of its citizens after Pakistan deported an estimated 5 million refugees back to Afghanistan last year. Meanwhile, India has also assured Muttaki of strengthening the health sector in Afghanistan and helping in the rehabilitation of refugees. Along with this, the issue of cricket between India and Afghanistan was also discussed.

Against these promises of India, Taliban has also promised India that it will not allow its country’s land to be used against India’s interests. Apart from this, regional security situation and issues of stable government and development in Afghanistan were also discussed between Vikram Misri and Maulana Muttaki.

However, the improvement in India-Afghanistan relations and this high-level meeting has irked Pakistan. Former Pakistani officer Abdul Basit, who was ambassador to India for a long time, said that relations between India and Taliban will improve. When the Taliban overthrew power in Afghanistan, India was the temporary chair of the UNSC. He feared civil war in Afghanistan due to Taliban. However, by holding this meeting in Dubai, India has indicated that it has accepted the Taliban. He also alleged that India is taking full advantage of the Pakistan-Taliban war.
