'Afghanistan team beat us in everything…', New Zealand captain expressed his pain after the humiliating defeat

T20 World Cup 2024: The New Zealand team led by Kane Williamson has suffered a major setback in the T20 World Cup 2024. New Zealand lost to Afghanistan by 84 runs on Saturday. This is New Zealand's biggest defeat in terms of runs in the T20 World Cup. Afghanistan scored 159/6 at the Guyana ground. In response, New Zealand scored 75 runs in 15.2 innings, which is their fourth lowest score in T20 cricket. Afghanistan captain and star leg-spinner Rasin Khan took four wickets. Fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqui also got the same number of wickets. New Zealand captain Williamson has expressed grief over this shameful defeat. He said, “Afghanistan beat us in all three categories.”

Williamson said after the match, first of all congratulations to the Afghanistan team. They beat us in every department. To reach that score, Afghanistan saved their wickets and scored well. We have to forget this defeat as soon as possible and focus on our next challenge. We need to move on now. Games come fast in this tournament. It was difficult to chase a target of 160 runs. We needed a partnership. The skill that Afghanistan's spinners have has made it difficult for us. Our fielding was disappointing, especially in the first 10 overs. We had a chance which we did not take.

The captain further said, “We need to take steps in the right direction. We know that we are better than today's performance. We have to move forward and give ourselves the best chance to go into the next match. We could not take advantage of the opportunity and it proved to be very helpful in changing the result of the match. Once they scored runs, their bowlers showed their skills. We will discuss it and then try to make a good comeback in the next match. Part of Group C, the New Zealand team will take on joint hosts West Indies in their second match of the tournament. The match will be held on June 12 at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad.
