After losing the Test series 1-3 on the Australian tour, the debate regarding the next Test captain of the Indian cricket team has intensified. Before the Sydney Test, Rohit Sharma had ruled himself out of the final match due to poor form, and Jasprit Bumrah took over the responsibility of captaincy in that Test. However, Bumrah once again got injured due to workload and could not bowl in the last innings. Looking at his fitness, it is clear that making him full-time captain could be a risky decision.

Who will be India’s next test captain?

There is a lot of speculation about the next Test captain of the Indian team. In this context, former Australian captain Adam Gilchrist has shared his views. Gilchrist believes that India should consider an experienced option instead of a young player.

What did Gilchrist say?

Gilchrist said on the latest episode of the Club Prairie Fire Podcast:

“If Jasprit Bumrah is made the full time captain, it can be challenging for him. I don’t think this would be the right decision for him.”
Gilchrist also added that he would not be surprised if Virat Kohli is given the captaincy again. He said:
“If the team management makes Virat the captain again, I will not find it strange. If Virat has no objection, it could be an option.”

Rohit Sharma’s future and England tour

Gilchrist also gave a big statement regarding Indian captain Rohit Sharma. He believes that Rohit will probably not take part in the Test series against England in June 2025.
He said:

“I don’t think Rohit will go to England. The priority for him could be the Champions Trophy. “After playing limited overs cricket in England, he might step away from Test cricket.”
Gilchrist also quipped that Rohit’s priority after returning home could be taking care of his newborn child.

Will Virat Kohli make a comeback?

Virat Kohli had already resigned from the captaincy, but considering his batting and leadership abilities on the field, the possibility of him being made the captain again cannot be ruled out. Gilchrist’s statement has further strengthened this possibility. Virat has experience, and under his captaincy India has achieved many historic achievements.

India’s next test schedule

India’s next Test series will be on the England tour in June 2025. This series will be important as the team will have to show consistency in performance to make it to the final of the next World Test Championship (WTC).

Rohit Sharma’s options and future plans

Gilchrist says that considering Rohit Sharma’s age and workload, he may retire from Test cricket after the Champions Trophy. In such a situation, India needs to choose a permanent and long-term captain.
