Not reaching the huge public meeting organized under opposition unity and ‘Save Vote, Save Country’ movement at the historic Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi has proved costly for the Indian Youth Congress leaders. The national leadership of the organization has adopted a tough stance and suspended more than 200 state level officials of 7 major states with immediate effect. This historic and biggest disciplinary action taken by the Youth Congress has created a stir in the internal corridors of the party. The clear message of the organization is that ignoring or organizational apathy towards the national programs and instructions given by Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge will not be tolerated at any cost.
The Youth Congress leadership had specially prepared state-of-the-art technology and digital surveillance system for this mega rally at Ramlila Maidan. QR barcode scanning counters were installed at the rally venue and major entry points like Minto Road in Delhi, where every functionary had to register his and his supporters’ presence by logging into the official app of Youth Congress ‘With IYC’. When the top leadership did a thorough review of the digital data immediately after the rally was over, it was found that a large number of state vice presidents, general secretaries and district president level officials were missing without any prior information or valid reason. Explanations were sought from the absent leaders, but when no satisfactory answer was received, suspension letters were issued on the instructions of the national leadership. Maximum 60 officials from Madhya Pradesh have come under the scanner for action. Apart from this, 49 senior officials from Gujarat, 32 from Jharkhand, 26 from West Bengal, 14 from Telangana, 11 from Uttar Pradesh (Central Region) and 10 from Haryana have been suspended.
After this quick and strict action taken by the organization, there is a lot of panic in the group of suspended leaders. Some affected officials, speaking in hushed tones, have claimed that due to the huge crowd around Connaught Place and Ramlila Maidan, the mobile internet network was completely halted. Due to this, despite being physically present at the rally, he failed to register his digital presence (QR Check-in) on the app. However, the Central Disciplinary Panel of the Indian Youth Congress has rejected this argument. Sources in the organization say that the leaders who had actually reached Delhi with hundreds of their workers, their presence has also been recorded by the ground teams. Those who did not come to Delhi, only tried to make the excuse of internet, which was caught in the investigation.
After this major internal reshuffle within the Youth Congress and suspension of wholesale prices, the politics of the country has also heated up. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly attacked Rahul Gandhi and the organizational structure of Congress regarding this issue. BJP spokespersons quipped that how will the youth of the country trust the words of a leader whose youth workers and officials themselves are not ready to come to Delhi to listen and support him? BJP termed this action as the result of internal divisions within Congress and decline in its support base. On the other hand, the National President of the Indian Youth Congress hit back and said that discipline is the real backbone of any cadre based organization. He clarified that the country is currently standing at the cusp of change and there is no place in the organization for people who are inactive or just hold positions. Only the one who works will remain on the post, otherwise new and energetic youth will be shown the way forward.
This big action taken after the Ramlila Maidan rally has made it completely clear that Congress wants to strengthen its front organizations in election mode. In view of the assembly elections of various states to be held in the coming months, the leadership is in no mood to lax at any level. According to sources, this is the first phase of action and the scope of investigation can be expanded further. Review data from some other states is being collected and the number of expulsions or suspensions may even reach 500. On these more than 200 vacant posts, the hardworking workers who work sincerely at the grassroots level and gather crowds at rallies will soon be promoted, which will give new momentum and edge to the organization.
