India's wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant was trying his luck to lead the team to victory in the third and final Test against New Zealand. After the top 5 batsmen were out for just 29 runs, Pant played a brilliant inning of 64 runs in 57 balls while chasing the target of 147 runs.
Pant had to return to the pavilion after his controversial dismissal against Ajaz Patel, which has become a topic of discussion on social media. New Zealand appealed to the wicketkeeper for a catch, but despite strong appeals from umpire Ajaz and the nearby fielder, he stood firm.
Umpire ruled in favor of New Zealand
New Zealand captain Tom Latham disagreed with Ijaz Patel and decided to review the decision. Upon review it was found that a spike appeared on the snicko meter as the ball passed through the bat. However, during this time Pant's bat also hit his pad. Despite the spike, the third umpire gave the decision in favor of New Zealand.
AB de Villiers expressed his displeasure
Angered by the decision, former South African captain AB de Villiers highlighted the 'gray areas' in DRS technology, and asked why hotspots were not part of the system.
India had to face a crushing defeat
Frustrated with the third umpire's decision, Pant also had a brief chat with one of the on-field umpires before going back to the dressing room. Ultimately New Zealand defeated India by 25 runs in the Mumbai Test and won the three-match Test series 3–0. New Zealand became the first team to defeat India 3-0 in India.
