London: The pocket watch gifted to the captain of Titanic, who saved the lives of hundreds of people, has been sold for 1.56 million pounds (Rs 16,64,12,532). This watch, which once belonged to Captain Arthur Rostron of the ship Carpathia, was purchased by a private collector in America at an auction conducted by Henry Aldridge & Son. This is the highest price ever paid for Titanic memorabilia. It overtook the previous record set in April, when a gold pocket watch belonging to Titanic passenger John Jacob Astor sold for £1.175 million.

Confirming the sale, Henry Aldridge & Son Ltd said, “This is a special day. The highlight of today’s auction was the sale of a Tiffany watch, which sold for £1.56 million. Captain Rostron receives an 18-carat Tiffany & Co. watch from the three rescued women. Under Rostron’s command, Carpathia rescued 700 people from Titanic’s lifeboats. Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said it was offered primarily to express gratitude for Rostron’s bravery in saving those lives.
