Bhawanigarh: A massive fire broke out this morning in a closed rice mill (sheller) just behind the petrol pump and warehouse on Patiala Road near Chandigarh-Bathinda National Highway. Although there is no news of any loss of life or property in this incident, the dead stock and plastic tarpaulin etc. lying in the rice mill were burnt to ashes. The fire was so severe that it spread like wildfire. Fire brigade personnel reached the spot and brought the fire under control.
Manjeet Singh, a resident of Bhawanigarh, who was working at the nearby petrol pump at the site of the incident, said that as soon as he came to know about the fire incident, he reached the spot and saw that there was garbage lying at the rice mill site. There was a fire and the fire was spreading. Hearing the scream, people gathered nearby and started trying to extinguish the fire at their level. Meanwhile, Bhawanigarh police station and fire brigade were informed and the fire brigade personnel brought the fire under control with great effort. He told that Havildar Ram Lal and Havildar Gurjinder Singh from Bhawanigarh police station had reached the spot.
Bhawanigarh warehouse inspector Inderjit Singh, who was present on the spot, said that the back wall of our warehouse is adjacent to the rice mill, which has been closed for a long time. There is enough grain in the warehouse. The fire brigade was called as soon as the fire incident was detected in the morning. He told that due to the fire many trees also got caught in the fire. People present on the spot said that if the fire was not controlled in time, the massive fire could have spread to the adjacent warehouse and the adjacent petrol pump warehouse, causing huge loss of life and property. People said that it is a matter of good fortune that due to the wheat season, the government has deployed a fire fighting vehicle in Bhawanigarh, which reached the spot within a few minutes and the fire could be controlled. People are demanding that the fire brigade vehicle should be parked permanently in Bhawanigarh. Till the time of writing the news, the cause of the fire could not be known.
