In 2006, India was facing a severe wheat shortage. To solve this problem, it was decided to import wheat, but there were many criticisms of this decision. Recalling an important meeting of that time, T. Nand Kumar said:
“I went to the Prime Minister to discuss this issue. He listened to me very carefully and explained like a professor. He said, ‘As Prime Minister, I cannot ensure that no Indian sleeps hungry.’ This shows the sensitivity and firmness of his decisions.”
Food crisis and introduction of national plans
In 2007, when concerns grew over food shortages in the country, Dr. Singh not only took it seriously but encouraged finding solutions. This resulted in several major initiatives:
- Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY):
This scheme was started to boost agricultural productivity and encourage farmers. - National Food Security Mission (NFSM):
This mission was implemented to increase the production of major food grains like rice and wheat. - Increase in Buffer Stock:
Food grain storage norms for emergencies 50 lakh tons was increased.
Global food crisis of 2008 and harsh decisions
In 2008, the global food crisis also affected India. During this time, the government had to take strict measures to secure domestic supplies.
- Under the leadership of Dr. Singh, Ban on export of non-Basmati rice Was applied.
- This decision was controversial at the time, but necessary to ensure domestic food security.
