To honor the contribution of Sikhs and promote their identity amid growing discrimination, America's Jersey City Municipal Council has unanimously approved a proposal to recognize April as 'Sikh Heritage Month'. The resolution passed 9-0 in the Jersey City City Council.
The proposal states that Sikhism is the fifth largest religion in the world, followed by 3 crore people worldwide and 3 lakh people in America. This religion teaches people to live a true life, serve humanity and worship God, emphasizing that every human being is equal in the eyes of God. The resolution said Sikhs are known for their contributions to society, such as providing free food to the needy.
The proposal comes at a critical time when Sikhs in the US often face discrimination, with Sikh children facing bullying and abuse in school. These anti-Sikh hate attacks have increased in recent years, with people often mistakenly associating the untrimmed beard and traditional turban of Sikhs with religious extremist groups.
The resolution aims to promote public education and awareness of the contributions of Sikhs and fight religious discrimination and extremism. After the motion passed, community activist Arjumand Juveria thanked the city council for its support and dedication to making the proposal a reality. He highlighted the Sikhs' selfless service, dedication to education and unwavering commitment to equality.
The resolution not only recognizes the contributions of Sikhs throughout history, but also conveys a message of appreciation and gratitude with the aim of inspiring others to embrace diversity and work towards creating a more harmonious and inclusive society.
