Today, One Nation One Election is being discussed in India. But there is one country in the world where elections have never been held. Before this this country was under other countries. Struggled for freedom for many years. After that, elections were never held there after independence.
There have never been elections in this country
There have never been elections in this country since independence. Since 1993, it has been ruled by only one person. This country located in the African continent is called Eritrea, elections have never been held here. Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a 30-year war.
Constitution was never implemented in this country
Eritrea has been ruled by President Isaias Afwerki since independence in 1993. President Isaias Afwerki’s People’s Front for Democracy and Justice is the only political party in the country. Apart from this there is no other party. Preparations were made to hold presidential elections in 1997, but this was never possible. Also the Constitution was never implemented there.
Became President after the 1993 referendum
Isaias Afwerki joined the struggle for independence from Ethiopia in 1966 and later founded and led the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front. Following the 1993 referendum on independence, he was elected President and Speaker of Parliament, giving him control over both the executive and legislative branches of government.
Eritrea is a one-party state and a highly militarized society. The government has tried to justify this by citing the threat of war with Ethiopia. A long period of conflict and severe drought have adversely affected Eritrea’s agricultural economy, and it is one of the poorest countries in Africa.
