Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the immigration unit of the Canadian government, has issued a notice in this regard. This notice states that Canada is discontinuing the Visitor Work Permit facility, which has been implemented from August 28, 2024.
Earlier, the rule in Canada was that people going to Canada on visitor visa were allowed to do temporary work, apart from this, visitor work permit was also given to the people by the immigration unit.
Now the Trudeau government has made the rules more stringent for people living in Canada on visitor visa. This means that now those people will not be able to apply for a work permit even while living in the country.
This rule was started in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time many people were stuck in Canada and were unable to go back. This was the reason why the government allowed them to stay and work in Canada and this rule was going to end next year i.e. by February 2025, but now the government has implemented it from 28 August.
IRCC says that all those who have applied before 28 August 2024 will be considered as per the old rules. Regarding this decision, experts say that this is another new way to reduce the number of immigrants from the country.
In fact, in Canada, the government is continuously taking such decisions due to many reasons like rising house prices, pressure on health services and elections.
