A Lebanese anti-tank mission on Monday struck a garden near Israel's northern border community of Margaliot, killing an Indian national and wounding two others, officials said. All three victims are residents of the southern state of Kerala.
The deceased was identified as Patnibin Maxwell, a resident of Kollam, Kerala. Official sources said his body was identified at Ziv Hospital.
Magen David Adom (MDA), a spokesman for the rescue services, told the news agency PTI The missile struck a plantation in Margaliot – a moshav (collective farming community) – in the Galilee region of northern Israel at around 11 a.m. on Monday, it said.
He said the other two Keralites, Bush Joseph George and Paul Melvin, were injured and were taken to hospitals for treatment. “George was taken to Bellinson Hospital in Petah Tikva with facial and body injuries,” an official source was quoted as saying.
The officer said, George underwent an operation and is currently under observation. He said he is recovering and can talk to his family.
Meanwhile, Melvin, a resident of Kerala's Idukki district, sustained minor injuries and was admitted to Ziv hospital in northern Israel's Safed city. Earlier, rescue services had said one foreign worker was killed and seven others were injured in the attack.
The attack is believed to have been carried out by the Shiite Hezbollah faction in Lebanon, which has been carrying out drone, rocket and missile attacks on northern Israel since October 8 in a show of support for Hamas. According to the MDA, seven foreign workers were injured in the attack, two of them seriously. They were all taken to Beilinson, Rambam and Ziv hospitals in their ambulances and Israeli Air Force helicopters.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Monday that they responded to the attack by shelling the launch site with artillery. “A short time ago, fighter aircraft attacked several positions of the terrorist organization Hezbollah in the areas of Bint Jabal, al-Saltaniya and Tzadikin in response to launches this morning towards the Margaliyat area. Among the targets attacked: military buildings and a military headquarters used by the organization,” the Israeli Air Force said.
The IDF also noted that it attacked a Hezbollah compound where its members had gathered in the southern Lebanon town of Chihne, and that another site belonging to Hezbollah in Ayta ash-Shab was attacked.
Hezbollah has been attacking northern Israeli communities and military posts since October 8, saying it seeks to support Gaza. Clashes between Israel and Hezbollah resulted in the deaths of seven civilians and 10 IDF soldiers on the Israeli side.
On the other hand, the terrorist organization revealed the names of 229 members who were killed by Israel during the recent violence. Most of the casualties on the Hezbollah side were in Lebanon, but some were also in Syrian territory. Another 37 members of other groups, one Lebanese soldier and at least 30 civilians have also been killed since 8 October.
