Mumbai/New Delhi, 02 September (HS). The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Monday that 97.96 percent of the two thousand rupee notes have returned to the banks. Although these notes are still legal tender, now notes worth Rs 7,261 crore withdrawn from circulation are in the possession of the people.
In a statement issued today, RBI said that the facility of exchanging notes of Rs 2,000 is available in 19 issue offices of RBI from May 19, 2023. The facility of depositing or exchanging two thousand rupees bank note was available in all bank branches across the country till October 7, 2023. The bank regulator said that from October 9, 2023, RBI's issue offices are also accepting bank notes of Rs 2000 denomination from individuals and institutions for depositing in their bank accounts. As of May 19, 2023, 97.96 percent of the Rs 2000 notes in circulation had returned to the banks. Now at the close of business on August 30, 97.96 percent of the notes worth Rs 2000 have returned to the banks.
According to RBI, people can send 2000 rupee notes from any post office in the country to any issue office of the Reserve Bank to deposit the amount in their bank accounts. The 19 RBI offices that can deposit or exchange notes are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
In fact, the government started the circulation of a new bank note of Rs 2000 after removing the bank notes of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 from circulation in November 2016. After this, the RBI announced the withdrawal of the bank note of Rs 2000 from circulation on May 19, 2023. According to the central bank, the total value of the Rs 2000 bank note in circulation at that time was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the end of trading.
