Violence again in Manipur: Manipur has once again been shaken by violence and firing. This time the Kuki extremists bombed the village with a drone. This is considered to be the most shocking trend in recent violence. The militants targeted the Kotruk and Kadangband valleys below the hilltop and first fired indiscriminately, then bombed with a drone. The sudden attack spread panic in the village and people started looking for a safe place to save their lives. Two people died in the attack. Nine others, including two security personnel, were injured.
According to the Kotruk Gram Panchayat chairman, armed militants opened fire at around 2 pm on Sunday. The village volunteers were not in the sensitive area at that time. The militants also damaged several houses in heavy firing. The villagers were in their homes when the firing and bombing started. A local resident, Leishangtham Rony, said the attack came 10 days after the village volunteers were called back from the area. After consulting the state security forces, we removed the volunteers from our village. One of our women was shot dead and her daughter was injured.
Villagers are angry over the incident!
The people of Kotruk village have expressed disappointment over the incident. They say that even though the state government has given assurances of restoring peace many times, we are not safe. Ningthoujam Tomalei, a member of the local women's monitoring group, said, “The state government often claims that peace has been restored, but we are still living in fear of attacks.” When will we really be safe?
Curfew imposed in Imphal West district
The Manipur Home Department has termed it a heinous act of terror which is a threat to the peace of the state. Meanwhile, local authorities have imposed curfew in Imphal West district. The Manipur government condemned the attack and assured strict action against those responsible.
Attacked with drones, bombs and sophisticated weapons
In a statement issued by the Manipur Home Ministry, it has been said that the state government has received information that the alleged Kuki extremists have carried out this incident. Unarmed villagers of Koutruk area have been attacked with drones, bombs and many sophisticated weapons. In which two people including a woman were killed and many people were injured. The state government has taken this act of terrorizing unarmed villagers very seriously. The government is making every effort to bring normalcy and peace in the state. N Biren Singh Government further said, immediate action has been initiated to control the situation and punish those involved in the attack on Kotruk village in Imphal West.
Kuki extremists attacked with high-tech drone
The information given by Manipur Police regarding this attack is very shocking. Police claimed that Kuki extremists used high-tech drones. Such drones are used only in wars. The attackers are not ordinary. This drone attack requires highly trained and technical expertise, which means that a big conspiracy cannot be ruled out in the entire scenario.
Police told, how deadly was the attack?
Manipur Police posted on Twitter and wrote, “There has been an attack in Kotruk area of Imphal West. Alleged Kuki terrorists planted several RPGs (rocket propelled grenades) using high-tech drones. While these drone bombs have been commonly used in wars. The use of drones to plant explosives against security forces and civilians is indicating a significant increase. The involvement of technical experts and highly trained professionals in this event cannot be ruled out. Officials are closely monitoring the situation. Police is ready to deal with any emergency. Police has appealed to the general public to maintain restraint.
Among those killed in the attack, local citizen Ngangbam Surabala (31 years) died of bullet injuries. While his 8-year-old daughter's hand has been injured. A woman has not been identified yet. 2 policemen have also been injured in the incident. A total of 9 people have been injured. Police said that 9 people have been injured. Out of these, 5 have been shot. Others were injured in the bomb blast.
Manipur DGP has said in an official order, proper coordination and joint investigation operations should be carried out among the security forces to prevent any untoward incident. The DGP has ordered all SPs to remain alert in all border areas.
Violence broke out for the first time in Manipur on 3 May 2023. There is a dispute between the Kuki and Meitei communities over reservation. So far 226 people have died in the violence. More than 1100 people have been injured. More than 65 thousand people have left their homes. The Meitei population in Manipur is about 53 percent, which mainly lives in the Imphal Valley, while the tribal community including Naga and Kuki is about 40 percent and mainly lives in the hilly districts.
