4 candidates left the field even before the election | News India

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections: Before the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, four out of 10 candidates of former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) have withdrawn their names. In fact, a few days ago, Azad withdrew from the election campaign due to poor health. He said that the candidates are free to withdraw their names.

The decision to contest the election was left to the candidates

He was admitted to AIIMS, Delhi on August 26 due to chest pain on the night of August 25. Then two days ago, Ghulam Nabi Azad, citing ill health, announced that he would not be able to participate in the assembly election campaign. He also left the decision of contesting the elections to the candidates.

The party could not perform well even in the Lok Sabha elections

Party sources said that Azad may come to Kashmir for two-three days but will not be able to take part in the election campaign. Azad left Congress two years ago and formed a separate party. He fielded candidates in the Lok Sabha elections but did not perform well.

Since then, there were speculations about his return to Congress, but Azad denied it and announced the candidates. Party vice-president GM Sarori has already filed nomination as an independent candidate from Inderwal seat of Kishtwar.

Azad said- candidates are free to withdraw their names

Azad said, 'I regret that I will not be able to campaign for my party's candidates.' He also left the decision of contesting the election to the candidates and said, 'If you want, you can withdraw your name from the candidature.'

219 candidates contested in the first phase

On the last day of withdrawal of nominations for 24 seats in the first phase of Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, 25 candidates withdrew from the election fray. Now only 219 candidates are in the fray.

In the first phase, polling is scheduled on September 18 for 16 assembly seats in four south Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian and Pulwama and eight assembly seats in Jammu province's Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar.
