Kolkata, Aug 30 (HS). Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials probing the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month have found some vital information about renovation work being carried out near the spot where the victim's body was recovered.
On the evening of August 13, after a division bench of the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the rape case probe from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, state Public Works Department (PWD) workers attempted to renovate a room near the site of the incident – next to the seminar hall where the victim's body was recovered on the morning of August 9.
However, the renovation work could not be carried out due to massive protests by students, who staged a demonstration in the hospital premises as soon as the work began. According to sources, the investigating officers have found a crucial document which shows that the instructions for the renovation work were given on August 10, a day after the victim's body was found.
Sources say, according to documents accessed by investigators, the directive was given by a former senior doctor of the hospital, who also held an administrative position and was transferred after the rape and murder incident. He is said to be very close to the former and controversial principal of the college, Sandip Ghosh.
Now CBI officials are trying to find out whether the senior doctor gave this instruction on his own or on someone's suggestion. Also, the officials of the central agency are trying to find out the mystery as to why the victim's body was ordered to be cremated in a hurry, instead of keeping it safe in the hospital morgue so that a second postmortem could be conducted if needed or on the demand of the victim's family members.
On Thursday afternoon, a CBI team reached the hospital and questioned some hospital staff and officials on whose instructions the arrangements for cremating the body were made. Ghosh is also being questioned as to why as the head of the medical college, he did not give instructions to keep the body safe in the mortuary so that a second postmortem could be conducted if needed.
