Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat's security has been upgraded from the existing Z-Plus to Advanced Security Liaison (ASL) protocol. With this upgrade, Bhagwat's security level will be at par with the Prime Minister and Home Minister. According to a recent analysis by the Home Ministry, this step has been taken because the threat against the RSS chief seems to be increasing.
The decision to enhance Bhagwat's security was taken two weeks ago. The upgrade is in response to a new risk analysis done ahead of the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The RSS, which has massive support in Jammu, is likely to play a big role during the elections.
It also came to light that security arrangements were not tight during Bhagwat's visits to non-BJP ruled states, where there is a bigger threat against Bhagwat.
Further, the analysis report highlighted threats received by him from various organisations including radical Islamic organisations and taking into account inputs from various agencies including the Intelligence Bureau, the Home Ministry classified Bhagwat as ASL protected. This information has been conveyed to all states and union territories.
It is imperative for the district administration, police, health and other departments to be involved in ensuring the safety of people protected under the ASL protocol.
Also, only specially designed helicopters are allowed to travel and protocols have been laid down for that too. The ASL protocol also mandates anti-tamper checks and has multi-layered security loops.
