Mumbai: According to a new report by non-profit IC3, there has been an alarming rise in student suicides in India, rising by 4.2 per cent during 2021-22. Whenever it comes to student suicides, the first name that comes to mind is Kota, but if we look at the state-wise cases of student suicides, Maharashtra has the highest number of cases.
The report shows that 13,044 student suicides were reported in India in 2022. Which was 13,089 in 2021. However, the overall suicide rate of students and the general public has increased by 4.2 percent. A total of 1,764 students have committed suicide in Maharashtra in 2022. Which accounts for 14 percent of student suicides. This is followed by 1416 cases of student suicide in Tamil Nadu, 1340 in Madhya Pradesh, 1060 in Uttar Pradesh and 824 in Jharkhand.
While in 2021, 1874 students committed suicide in the state, 1308 in Madhya Pradesh, 1246 in Tamil Nadu, 855 in Karnataka and 834 in Odisha. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh are among the top states in terms of suicide. One-third of the total number of suicides across the country come from these states. While Rajasthan, which is famous for the coaching city Kota, comes tenth in the said order with 571 student suicides.
The gender disparity in suicide rates during this period is also striking. Student suicides have increased by 50 per cent in the last decade while female student suicides have increased by 61 per cent. Of the total students who committed suicide in 2022, 53 per cent were male students. During 2021-22, the suicide rate of male students has decreased by 6 per cent while the suicide rate of female students has increased by 7 per cent.
