Guwahati, August 28 (HS). The opposition Aikya Manch, an alliance of opposition parties in Assam, has given an application to register an FIR against Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in Dispur police station. In a written complaint given by State Congress President Bhupen Kumar Bora and General Secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, the Chief Minister has been accused of trying to promote enmity between different groups on the basis of religion and caste.
The written complaint states that anger is erupting across Assam against the rape of a student of Dhing. The Chief Minister is trying to incite communal frenzy by targeting the particular community of the person accused in this incident, due to which some people belonging to religious minorities have been attacked by BJP workers and leaders in Sivasagar. In one such incident, Mayur Bargohain, a defeated candidate from Nazira constituency in the 2021 assembly elections, beat up some laborers working under him. This has been done as part of a conspiracy to create a riot-like situation in the state. Himanta Biswa Sarma and other BJP leaders are part of a criminal conspiracy to create such unrest.
State Congress president Bhupen Kumar Bora said Sarma has a history of making provocative statements targeting a particular community. A year ago, he had appealed to people to drive out people belonging to a religious community (which he called “Miyan”) from Guwahati. Continuing his attack against religious minorities, he targeted a journalist named Shah Alam on August 4 with clear communal insinuations. During a press conference on August 23, he again referred to a religious community and made baseless claims that after entering a particular area, a person belonging to a particular community deliberately starts eating beef, due to which people of other communities leave that place and thus they occupy these areas. Such frequent statements in public are likely to create animosity among different communities.
Apprehending a riot-like situation in the state, the Congress leaders have demanded an investigation by registering a case against the chief minister and co-conspirators under sections 61, 196 and 35(2) of the Indian Penal Code, 2023.
The police have assured the leaders of opposition parties of further action on the written complaint. However, the police have not yet disclosed what action they have taken in this case.
