The era of Fastag seems to be coming to an end. Although nothing has been said officially about this, there are reports that the government is preparing to replace it with a new system called GNSS. GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satellite System, which has also been mentioned by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. It is being said that this system is currently in the testing phase.
What is GNSS?
The next GNSS navigation will be based on satellite system. It will have a satellite based unit which will be installed in vehicles. This will enable the authorities to track when the cars start using the toll highway. As soon as the vehicle exits the toll road, the system will calculate the usage of the toll road and deduct the amount. The special thing is that with its help, passengers will have to pay only this much money for their journey.
What is the benefit?
With its help, passengers will be able to know the exact amount of toll road usage and payment. Apart from this, with its arrival, traditional toll booths will also be removed, where sometimes long queues used to form.
When is GNSS coming?
At present, the government has not announced the date for this, but it is being tested on two major highways of the country. These include Bengaluru-Mysore National Highway (NH-257) in Karnataka and Panipat-Hisar National Highway (NH-709) in Haryana. After getting the green signal from the top, it will be implemented in a phased manner.
