Cooch Behar, 28 August (HS). On Wednesday, the day of the 12-hour Bengal bandh called by the BJP, reports of unrest came from various places in West Bengal. During the bandh in Cooch Behar, two BJP MLAs were arrested by the police and were forcibly taken away in a police vehicle. In view of the possibility of tension on Wednesday, a large number of police forces were deployed on the road and efforts were on to keep the traffic normal.
On Wednesday morning, BJP workers and supporters sat on a dharna in front of the new bus stand of North Bengal National Transport in Cooch Behar. They sat in front of a bus and started raising slogans. After this the police entered the fray. Tufanganj MLA Malati Rava Roy and Cooch Behar South MLA Nikhil Ranjan De were arrested. BJP workers and supporters were dragged into police vehicles.
Mihir Goswami, another BJP MLA involved in the bandh, said, “The way common people have come out on the streets against the oppressive Mamata government, they are still not giving up. We will continue peaceful protests on the RG tax issue and demand the resignation of the Chief Minister.”
