Kolkata: The CBI has started raiding the houses of several officials of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On Sunday morning, various teams of the central agency reached Keshtopur, Howrah, Entali in North Kolkata. The house of Debashish Som, head of the forensic medicine department of RG Kar, is in Keshtopur.
Former superintendent of the hospital Sanjay Vashisht lives in Antali. Apart from this, CBI is also conducting raids at the house of a person named Biplab Singh in Howrah. This raid has been conducted in connection with the complaint of financial irregularities against former principal Sandeep Ghosh and others by former additional superintendent of RG Kar Hospital Akhtar Ali. On the order of the High Court, CBI has started investigating the corruption case by registering an FIR on Saturday.
The agency took over the investigation from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the West Bengal government on the direction of the Calcutta High Court. The High Court (which had already handed over the probe into the rape and murder of the doctor to the CBI) had also ordered a probe into financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during the tenure of former principal Dr Sandip Ghose. It was handed over to the CBI to ensure a fair probe.
The former deputy superintendent of the hospital had demanded an inquiry
The court gave this order on the petition of Dr. Akhtar Ali. Dr. Akhtar was the Deputy Superintendent of the hospital till 2023. Ali filed a petition in the High Court on Wednesday demanding an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into the alleged misconduct and financial scams that surfaced during Ghosh's tenure.
Ali had made several allegations against Ghosh in the petition
In his petition, Ali has accused Ghosh of illegally using unclaimed bodies, illegally selling biomedical waste, and awarding tenders based on commissions paid by drug and medical equipment suppliers. Ali has also alleged that students were pressured to pay Rs 5 to Rs 8 lakh to pass the exams.
After filing the petition, Ali said, 'In July 2023, I filed a written complaint with the State Vigilance Commission but no action was taken against Ghosh. I want everyone involved in this racket to be exposed.
The incident took place on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital
The medical college hit the headlines after the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in a seminar hall on August 9. The prime suspect, Sanjoy Roy, a civilian volunteer working for the Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10 and is currently in custody.
