Mumbai: The opposition's announcement of a bandh in entire Maharashtra including Mumbai created a ruckus, but now the bandh has been withdrawn. Hearing the petitions against the bandh announcement, the Bombay High Court today declared the bandh announcement completely illegal and asked any person or party to stay away from such announcements. After this, on the advice of Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray announced the withdrawal of the bandh announcement. However, Uddhav said that the decision of the High Court is not acceptable to him, but still he withdrew the announcement yesterday citing it. Earlier in the day, Uddhav had announced a bandh till 2 pm, but after the bandh announcement was completely withdrawn late in the evening, it has now been ensured that trains, buses, markets will continue in entire Maharashtra. Public life will continue as normal in the entire state including Mumbai on Saturday.
A rail roko movement was organized in Badlapur last Tuesday against the brutality of a young sweeper with two girls studying in nursery in Badlapur near Mumbai. After this, the state government started a series of arrests by registering cases against more than 500 agitators. The Sharad Pawar-led NCP, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and Congress's Mahavikas Aghadi announced a bandh on Saturday in protest against the failure of public awareness and police in connection with the Badlapur incident.
Till this morning, the Mahavikas Aghadi was adamant on calling a bandh and Uddhav Thackeray said that the bandh was called to express the anger of the people. However, it was decided that the full-day bandh will now be limited to half a day as Uddhav announced that it will be closed only till 2 pm.
However, by late evening the picture had changed. On the petitions filed in the High Court demanding a stay on the announcement of this bandh, the High Court declared the bandh illegal and finally the opposition surrendered.
