Eight months after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Lakshadweep in January, interest among Indian tourists to visit the region has also increased.
When Modi visited Lakshadweep in January, some of his pictures were shared on his official X account. In the pictures, Prime Minister Modi was seen strolling and snorkeling on the white beach. Of course, Maldivian politicians made controversial comments on Indians regarding these pictures. This increased the craze of Indian tourists to visit Lakshadweep instead of Maldives. On the other hand, the number of Indian tourists visiting Maldives from April to July 2024 fell by a massive 45 percent. The number of Indian tourists visiting Maldives last year was 66,375, which has come down to 36,761 this year. Maldives, which was third in the list of top three tourist destinations for Indians, has now slipped to sixth place. According to government data, the number of tourists visiting Lakshadweep has doubled between April and June this year. The number of Indian tourists visiting Lakshadweep increased to 22,990 in April-June from just 11,074 in the same period last year. Air traffic to Lakshadweep increased by 88 percent. The number of aircraft movements increased from 418 to 786. Despite the limitations of Lakshadweep airport, air traffic increased significantly. According to a report, the number of flights to Lakshadweep was 31 in July 2023. This number has increased to 106 in July 2024. That is, the number of flights to Lakshadweep has increased three and a half times. Similarly, seat availability for Lakshadweep was 2,170 in July 2023, which increased to 7,844 in July 2024 across three airlines.
