New Delhi: Now companies will not be able to sell milk, ghee and butter in the market under the name of A1 and A2. In fact, the Food Safety Regulatory Authority on Thursday directed all grain traders including e-commerce companies to remove the claims of A1 and A2 types of milk and milk products from the packaging. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said that these claims are not in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
FSSAI said that it examined the issues related to claims related to A1 and A2 and found that the difference in A1 and A2 milk is related to the structure of beta casein protein which varies depending on the breed of the cow. The regulator said that the currently existing rules do not recognize this difference. The regulator said that it has directed the companies doing milk business to remove such claims from their products. Also, e-commerce platforms have also been asked to immediately remove these claims from their products and websites. Companies have already been given six months to stop printing packaging and this deadline will not be extended in future. The regulator has directed to strictly follow this instruction. Welcoming the order, Devendra Shah, Chairman of Parag Milk Foods, said that the FSSAI order is a step in the right direction. He said that claims A1 and A2 are words made under the marketing strategy. It is important that we eliminate misleading claims that misinform consumers. He said that A1 and A2 milk product categories never existed and this practice is also dying out globally.
