Green Tax in Punjab: Punjab's Aam Aadmi Party The government has imposed green tax on vehicles. People have to pay this tax at the time of renewal of vehicle registration. This will also make the renewal of vehicles expensive. The government has increased the motor vehicle tax on private vehicles from 0.5 percent to 2 percent.
It is learnt that the central directives have been implemented. The Transport Department has issued a notification in this regard and the 'Green Tax' will be implemented from September 1. In the meeting of the Punjab Cabinet on August 14, the 'Green Tax' and the increase in the Motor Vehicle Tax were given the green signal.
The state government is expected to earn about Rs 35 crore annually from 'Green Tax'. Green tax will be collected by the Transport Department at the time of renewal of registration of private vehicles older than 15 years and commercial vehicles older than eight years. At present, there are about 73 thousand private four-wheelers in the state which are 15 years old and their registration is about to be renewed.
Apart from this, commercial vehicles will not have to pay green tax for 8 years. After this, green tax of Rs 250 to Rs 2500 will have to be paid every year. Punjab Transport Department has issued a notification.
The government has excluded vehicles running on LPG, CNG, battery or solar energy from this category. Talking about private vehicles, diesel vehicles will have to pay more tax. According to the notification of the Punjab government, the green tax on diesel vehicles has been kept higher than petrol two-wheelers and cars.
