Uttarkashi, 22 August (HS). Due to continuous rain in the mountains, the fast flow of Bhagirathi river in Harshil is causing continuous soil erosion on the Gangotri highway. On one hand, this has posed a threat to the existence of the ancient Bal Kandar temple, while on the other hand, the Gangotri highway is in danger. There is a lot of anger among the public representatives regarding the matter.

Harshil village head Dinesh Rawat said that the Gangotri highway is continuously eroding due to the strong flow of the Bhagirathi river near the Bal Kandar temple. Only three feet of the road is left there now. Due to the continuous erosion, the existence of the Gangotri highway as well as the Bal Kandar temple is in danger. Bal Kandar temple is the main stop on the Gangotri Dham Yatra.

It is said that the pilgrimage to the Dham is complete only when the pilgrims visit this temple. Pradhan Dinesh Rawat alleged that BRO is doing a formality in the name of security here. Every year BRO installs a wire-crate wall here, but it does not last. Many times the local people have demanded to install an RCC wall there, but no action is being taken. Local people say that while this negligence will affect the movement of Gangotri Dham, international border and 8 villages, it will also be a big blow to faith due to the danger to Bal Kandar temple.

Uttarkashi BRO OC Major Siddharth Gautam said that an assessment for security works is being prepared and sent to the higher level. Security works will be done there soon.
