ADR Report: The incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor in a Kolkata hospital has sparked a nationwide debate and the issue of women's safety is heating up once again. As political parties are also raising this issue, cases of crimes against women against politicians are coming to light. According to the ADR report, there are 151 current MPs and MLAs in the country who have cases of harassment of women. Out of which 16 cases are related to rape of women.
During the year 2019 to 2024, MPs and MLAs have also given details of criminal cases registered against them in their affidavits submitted to the Election Commission. Out of a total of 4809 affidavits, 4693 were verified by ADR. Out of which 16 MPs and 135 MLAs are involved in anti-women crime cases. If we look at the states, West Bengal tops this list. There are 25 such MPs and MLAs in Bengal against whom cases of atrocities on women are registered.
After Bengal, Andhra Pradesh is second with 21 leaders and Odisha is third with 17 leaders. These figures have been released at a time when the incidents of exploitation of two girls in Thane and the brutal murder of a junior doctor after rape in Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital are in the news.
According to the report, 16 sitting MPs and MLAs have declared that a rape complaint has been filed against them under Section 376 of the IPC. Which carries a punishment of 10 years or more. Out of the total 16, this includes two MPs and 14 MLAs.
If we look at the party, BJP is at the first position in the case of atrocities on women. Such cases are registered against 54 MPs and MLAs of BJP. Whereas Congress is at the second position with 23 seats and TDP is at the third position with 17 seats. Rape cases have been registered against five sitting representatives of both BJP and Congress parties.
It is worth noting that Lok Sabha elections were held in the country this year, in which many types of criminal cases are going on against the elected MPs. According to the data, 46 percent of all currently elected MPs have criminal cases against them. That is, out of 543, 251 MPs have cases against them, out of which 27 have been convicted.
10 years ago, in 2014, this figure was 185 (34%), in 2009 it was 162 (30%), in 2004 it was 125 (23%). That is, after 2009, the number of such MPs has increased by 55%. This year, 170 (31%) of the MPs have cases of serious crimes including rape, murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women.
