Guwahati, August 21 (HS). Two BJP leaders filed their nomination papers in the assembly on Wednesday for the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Assam. The BJP has nominated Rameshwar Teli and Mission Ranjan Das as its candidates for the Rajya Sabha.
Both the BJP leaders today formally filed their nomination papers in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State President Bhabesh Kalita and Assam Gana Parishad President and Assam Government Minister Atul Bora.
It is worth noting that Rameshwar Teli was earlier an MLA from Duliajan assembly constituency. He was also a Union Minister of State as an MP from Dibrugarh Lok Sabha. Mission Ranjan Das is a four-time former MLA from North Karimganj constituency. Meanwhile, the opposition is yet to announce its candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections.
It is believed that due to lack of mutual harmony, the opposition will not field its candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections this time. In such a situation, the victory of both the BJP candidates is considered certain. It is worth noting that despite being the MP of Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat, Rameshwar Teli was not given a ticket by the party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and Mission Ranjan Das's ticket was also cut by the party during the assembly elections. Despite this, both the leaders did not oppose the decision of the party in any way, which is why the BJP has decided to send both the leaders to the Upper House.
An important meeting of Assam State BJP President Bhabesh Kalita and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma was held with the central leadership in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the names of both the state leaders. The Chief Minister said that both the candidates are committed to strengthening the party organization.
