Mumbai: Public outrage erupted after two nursery students aged four and six years were sexually abused in a toilet by a sweeper at a private school in Badlapur in Thane district. This morning, angry crowds reached Badlapur station and occupied the tracks for almost a day due to the Dai Rail Roko agitation, bringing local train services to a halt. Trains on the Mumbai-Pune route were also disrupted. Police repeatedly tried to remove the people from the railway track by lathi-charge but the police also got confused as the people countered them by pelting stones. To avoid any political fallout ahead of the assembly elections, no strict action was taken against the rail-roko mob.

The agitators took the entire Badlapur station hostage from around 10 am today and adopted a fierce stance that they will sit on the track and will not leave the station until the accused are hanged, which left the railway administration, railway police and police officials perturbed. The unprecedented rail roko movement that started at 10 am lasted for more than seven hours. Due to this movement, local trains of Central Railway including suburban trains were affected and people were sitting in mail express trains for hours. Local trains were stopped in both directions between Ambarnath and Karjat and passengers were confused. Due to these rail roko, many long distance trains were forced to take other routes. Railway administration and senior police officials reached the spot to intervene but the agitators were not ready to believe anything they said. They took the stand that the movement will not be withdrawn until the Chief Minister himself comes.

On receiving information about the incident, Railway Police Commissioner Ravindra Shisve and Ulhasnagar DCP Sudhakar Pathare reached the spot and tried hard to convince the protesters, but they did not relent and kept demanding the hanging of the accused with the slogan of 'hang them'.

Railway sources said that about 30 locos were cancelled by noon. This figure was likely to increase by evening. Apart from this, 12 trains of Pune route were diverted to Panvel route. Solapur-Mumbai Vande Bharat was also stopped. Apart from the local municipality, the railways requisitioned buses for the passengers stranded near the state ST. As against the demand of more than 100 buses, barely 60 buses could run between Kalyan and Karjat.

To prevent damage to railway property, RPF raids were conducted on the route between Kalyan and Karjat. Arrangements for GRP jawans were also made.

The role of Badlapur police is suspicious

When the parents went to the police to lodge a complaint, the police made them sit for 11 hours

– CCTV cameras in the school are also off: Complaint taken after intervention of child welfare officers

After this incident, when the child's parents went to the Badalpur police station late on Friday night to lodge a complaint, they were made to wait for hours. This incident sparked anger against the police administration. During this time, police station in-charge Shubhada Shitole made the parents sit for hours instead of registering their complaint. She told the parents that a preliminary investigation of the incident was underway. However, police investigation revealed that the school's CCTV was switched off.

Meanwhile, following the intervention of district women and child welfare officials, the police registered a case under the POCSO Act on Saturday morning and got the girls medically examined.

After much persuasion, there was a squabble throughout the day

Police lathicharged and pelted stones on the protesters

– The police was stunned to see the violence of the protesters, stopped the action to avoid political embarrassment

A large number of agitators entered the railway premises and started a Rail Roko movement demanding justice in the case of the brutality of a school girl in Badlapur. For hours throughout the day, the railways, RPF and ministers and other officials were convincing people to at least vacate the railway tracks and resume train services. However, clashes broke out in the evening as the police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd and the agitators responded by pelting stones. Badlapur residents are very angry after the incident of brutality of the girl in Badlapur. So they started a 'Rail Roko' movement from this morning. A large number of railway passengers and local citizens participated in it and the police resorted to lathicharge to drive everyone out of the railway premises. So the more agitated agitators, which included railway passengers, parents of the school where the incident took place and others, pelted stones in retaliation. However, seeing the uproar of tourists and the lathicharge, the police stopped the action fearing political repercussions.

The police administration is also stunned by this kind of agitation by the people of Badlapur. The parents reached the school first thing in the morning and created a ruckus there, making the police administration sweat. Later these agitators reached the railway station and started a train roko aandolan.
