Jammu, August 18 (HS). The National Service Scheme (NSS) team of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) had the distinct honour of participating in the Independence Day celebrations at the iconic Red Fort in New Delhi as special invitees. NSS volunteers Sadhvi Sharma and Harish Patel, along with Programme Officer Dr. Rajiv Kumar, were selected for this prestigious occasion by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The three-day visit witnessed important interactions with prominent personalities including a special meeting with the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya at the Akashvani Kendra Auditorium. The NSS team also had the opportunity to interact with Minister of State for Defence, Nikhil Khadse and Director of NSS in New Delhi, Vanita Sood.
The main attraction of the event was Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing the gathering at the historic Red Fort which was attended by a total of 400 NSS volunteers from across the country. It is notable that eight of these volunteers were from Jammu and Kashmir. NSS Programme Officer Dr. Rajeev Kumar acted as the team leader for Regional Directorate NSS New Delhi in which volunteers from Haryana, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Union Territories were represented.
The trip also included a series of cultural and historical excursions around Delhi including visits to the Prime Minister's Museum, India Gate and National Police Memorial. The NSS SMVDU team expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Regional Directorate NSS New Delhi and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for the special invitation which they termed as a significant and proud achievement. Vice Chancellor Prof. Pragati Kumar congratulated the NSS team for their remarkable participation in this historic event.
