The first coin in India was issued as a one rupee currency on 19 August 1757. This coin of one rupee value was issued by the East India Company. It was minted in the mint of Calcutta.

Actually, the Battle of Plassey ended at that time and the British Raj began in India through the East India Company. After the treaty with the Nawab of Bengal, the East India Company got the right to make coins. For this, it started by establishing a mint in Calcutta. The special thing is that at that time different currencies were in circulation in different parts of the country. Due to this, to overcome the problems in trade, the Uniform Coinage Act was passed in the year 1835 and then a single currency came into circulation in the whole country. The circulation of different currencies started to end, by then the British had occupied the whole country. The East India Company established the first mint in Surat in the year 1613. After that it was also established in Ahmedabad and Bombay, but the credit for issuing one rupee coin is recorded in the account of Calcutta Mint.
