IMA's letter to PM Modi
The rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 has sparked outrage across the country. Doctors are continuously protesting. On Saturday, doctors across the country went on a 24-hour strike on the call of IMA to protest against the Kolkata incident.

After 24 hours of protest, the Indian Medical Association has written a letter to Prime Minister Modi. IMA said that 'the lack of safe places for women is leading to crimes on a large scale. Vandalism takes place due to lack of safety protocols. This crime and vandalism has shaken the conscience of the whole country. Today doctors across the country have provided services only in emergency situations.

IMA made these demands
1) The 2020 amendment to the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 was drafted and it became a central law. This will strengthen 25 states.
2) The security protocol of all hospitals should be no less than that of an airport. Hospitals should be declared safe zones with mandatory security rights. Hospitals should have CCTVs, deployment of security personnel and follow protocols.
3) The victim was working 36-hour duty shifts, hence there was a need for drastic changes in the working and living conditions of the resident doctors due to lack of rest rooms as well as safe spaces.
4) Any crime must be investigated carefully and professionally within the prescribed time frame and justice must be delivered.
5) The bereaved family should get proper and respectable compensation.
