Assembly elections are being held for the first time in the state after the removal of Article 370. Since the formation of the state and union territory in 2019, political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have been demanding early elections and retaining the status of a full state. The Supreme Court also directed the Election Commission to complete the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September.
The last election was held in 2014
The last elections to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly were held in 2014 before the formation of the state. About 65 percent voting took place for the 87 seats of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. If we look at the election results, BJP got the highest 23 percent votes, but the party came second after PDP with 25 seats. PDP emerged as the largest party by winning 28 seats.
Elections on 90 seats of Jammu and Kashmir
Assembly elections could not be held in Jammu and Kashmir for a long time due to the incomplete work of new delimitation. After the new delimitation in May-2023, the number of seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has now become 90. In this way, elections are to be held on 43 assembly seats in Jammu and 47 assembly seats in Kashmir. In the year 2014, elections were held on 87 assembly seats. Out of which 37 seats were from Jammu and 46 seats were from Kashmir Valley, six seats were from Ladakh.
