New Delhi, August 15 (HS). After the brutal crime at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and the hooliganism on the protesting students on the eve of Independence Day, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a 24-hour nationwide strike. IMA issued a press release late Thursday night and informed about the nationwide strike.

The Indian Medical Association has said that in view of the incidents of violence against doctors, services will be closed for 24 hours from 6 am on Saturday 17 August to 6 am on Sunday 18 August. However, all essential services will remain operational during this time. The injured will be treated, but regular OPD will remain closed and no elective surgeries will be performed. The IMA further said that this shutdown will be in all areas where modern medical doctors are providing services.

IMA says that the attack on protesting doctors at RG Kar Medical College on Wednesday night is very unfortunate and condemnable. IMA needs the sympathy of the nation towards the just cause of its doctors. We just want the safety of the doctors.
