TRAI on CNAP feature: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had taken a decision to implement the CNAP feature a few days ago. A report came out in February, which claimed that now users will also see the name of the caller along with the number on the mobile screen. However, no time limit was given in this regard. Now an important information has come to light in this regard.

According to telecom operators, this feature can be implemented, although there are chances of many problems in it. Because, it is not possible to provide this facility on 2G and 3G networks. It is possible to make this facility available for 4G and 5G users. That is, 270 to 300 million 2G users will have to upgrade their network. Along with this, the smartphones that came in the market after 2021 have technology to support CNAP features. Therefore, it may take some time for the CNAP feature to be launched on 4G and 5G as well.

Outrage from mobile companies

Senior officials of private telecom companies Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea told ET Now that TRAI has decided to implement the CNAP feature without knowing the ground reality. This service is not a universal solution. This feature will not work in phones. It will also support only 4G and 5G networks at present. In such a situation, crores of 2G users of India will not get this service. As a telecom service provider, we should treat all users equally.

What did TRAI say?

In February, TRAI had ordered that CNAP should be implemented within 6 months. While giving information in the Parliament, the Union Minister also said that testing of CNAP feature has been started. However, no official information has been given by the companies in this regard yet. Experts are of the opinion that this feature should not be implemented without knowing the ground reality. This is because doing so can cause problems for everyone.
