The new bowling coach of the Indian cricket team has been announced. Former South African bowler and coach of Lucknow Super Giants in IPL, Morne Morkel has been appointed as the new bowling coach of Team India. He will take charge from September 1. Cricket website Cricbuzz gave this information on Wednesday, August 14, quoting Jay Shah.
There were already discussions about appointing the 39-year-old former South African bowler as bowling coach. It is being told that Indian team's head coach Gautam Gambhir has demanded Morkel to be appointed bowling coach. Both have worked with IPL franchise Lucknow Supergiants. Morne Morkel's first assignment will be the Test series against Bangladesh. Two Tests and three T20 matches will be played in the series starting from September 19.
Morkel was the coach of the Pakistan team during the ODI World Cup 2023. However, he resigned before the expiry of his contract. Pakistan's performance in the World Cup was not good and they failed to make it to the semi-finals. He was also associated with the coaching staff of Namibia during the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Apart from this, he has been the coach of Durban Super Giants in South Africa's SA20 League.
Morkel has taken 309 wickets in 86 Test matches. Meanwhile, his average has been 27.66. Meanwhile, his best performance has been 6 wickets for 23 runs. He has taken 5 wickets eight times. Talking about his ODI career, he has taken 188 wickets in 117 matches. During this, his average has been 25.32. He took 47 wickets in 44 T20 international matches.
