Filling of nomination forms for by-elections on 12 vacant seats of Rajya Sabha has started from today. Nomination forms can be filled till 21st August. In which NDA has to decide its candidates on 11 seats and Congress on one seat. According to the information, names have almost been finalized on 4 out of 12 seats, while suspense still remains on 8 seats.

On which 12 seats will there be elections?

12 seats have fallen vacant due to the resignation of leaders. According to the Election Commission, Maharashtra, Bihar and Assam have two seats each, while Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Rajasthan, Haryana, Telangana and Odisha have one seat each.

Who can be a candidate for which seat?

  • Separate nominations will be filed for the two Rajya Sabha seats of Bihar. Here the NDA has to decide the candidates for both the seats. The name of one candidate Upendra Kushwaha has already been announced. Kushwaha is the president of NDA's ally party Raloma. Recently he contested the Lok Sabha elections from Karakat seat, but he could not win.
  • The second seat will go to the account of Janata Dal United. It is being said that JDU can field Saryu Rai from this seat. Saryu Rai is a member of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly and has recently joined Nitish Kumar's party. Assembly elections are to be held in Jharkhand later this year.
  • After the Lok Sabha elections, Rajya Sabha member Mamta Mohanta resigned from Naveen Patnaik's party Biju Janata Dal. Mohanta left BJD and joined BJP. Now elections are going to be held on this seat too.
  • Rajya Sabha elections are to be held on 2 seats in Assam. Recently a meeting was held regarding the candidates for these seats, in which a list of 5 names was sent to the high command. According to Assam BJP President Bhabhesh Kalita, the party has sent the names of former Union Minister Rameshwar Teli, Rajdeep Roy, Tapan Gogoi, Manav Deka and Mission Ranjan Das. The decision has to be taken by the high command.
  • Teli was a Lok Sabha MP from Dibrugarh, but in 2024 the party cancelled his ticket and gave it to Sarbananda Sonowal. Rajdeep Roy and Tapan Gogoi are former MPs. Manab Deka is the current MLA and Mission Ranjan Das is a former MLA.
  • A by-election is also proposed for a Rajya Sabha seat in Telangana. This seat will go to the Congress. There is talk of senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi becoming the candidate from here. Singhvi was the Congress candidate in the Himachal Rajya Sabha elections in March, but could not win.

When will the Rajya Sabha by-election be held?

In this by-election for 12 Rajya Sabha seats, candidates can file nominations till August 21. Scrutiny of nomination forms will be done on August 22. Candidates from Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tripura can withdraw their nomination forms till August 26, while candidates from Bihar, Rajasthan, Telangana, Odisha and Haryana can withdraw their nomination forms till August 27.

If elections are required, voting will be held for the respective seats on September 3. Assembly members can vote in this election. According to the Election Commission, the voting process will be completed by 4 pm on September 3. After this, counting of votes will start from 5 pm.
